Fall is the time of year when termites in Arizona start foraging and aggressively feeding.
“September through November is peak termite season in Arizona,” says Tim Johnston, owner of Johnston’s Pest Solutions in Tucson, Ariz. “With the weather we’ve been having, I think we’ll have a good season, and I expect to see a large consumption of bait.”
A big proponent of the Sentricon® System, Johnston served on a Dow AgroSciences advisory council for nine years. He started his own company in 2005 and became a Certified Sentricon Specialist™ (CSS) in 2010 with the launch of Always Active™ technology.
“Always Active technology is ideal for Certified Sentricon Specialists in Arizona,” he says. “If termites are living under a home’s concrete foundation, the only way we can get to the source is by installing Sentricon. Termites can access the bait regardless of where they’re living in or around the home.”
Johnston was aware that homeowners were modifying their spending habits due to the recession, so he wanted to come up with a way to sell Sentricon in today’s marketplace.
He developed a Complete Pest Program, a cross-selling tool, which covers everything from rodents to bees to termites. The program was initially created for property owners who travel regularly or only live in their Arizona homes during certain times of the year, but it is now available to all customers. Today, he has Complete Pest accounts covering hundreds of properties in the Tucson area.
“We’re always trying to do what we can to prevent issues down the road. Our program takes away any questions or concerns. Customers know their homes are being protected, whether they’re home or away,” he says.
Technicians visit homes participating in the program every other month to monitor for pests. Even if houses are installed with the Sentricon System with Always Active technology, technicians still visit the properties to monitor for other pests.
Labor costs have decreased, because the technicians are already scheduled for service.
“I’m pleased that we’re able to add Sentricon with Always Active technology to this program,” he says. “It takes away any customer uncertainty.”
CSSs also benefit from the Complete Pest Program by improving revenue per customer while reducing labor costs.
“Every CSS should be participating in this program. It will improve your bottom line instantly,” Johnson says.
Johnston’s Pest Solutions also offers termite-only service for homeowners and businesses with termite control issues. The company uses literature created for the Sentricon® System, like the fact sheet for Always Active technology, to assist with renewals. This fact sheet and others are available to CSSs on the AO Resource Center.
“Always Active technology sells itself, but these literature pieces are a great addition,” Johnston says. “They really speak to the customer.”
Technicians service homes installed with Sentricon with Always Active™ technology annually or semi-annually if the house has a history of termites.
“We want to give our customers peace of mind,” he says. “And we can do that by providing them with termite control 365 days a year.”
