In business, it’s good to stand out from the crowd. That was the thought behind the custom truck decals that Robertson’s Termite and Pest Control in Lyons, Kan., is using. When it came time to purchase some new work trucks, owner Garlan Old decided to use it as an opportunity to help his company stand out from its competition.
“We needed three new trucks, and we didn’t want white, red or blue trucks because that’s what most other pest control companies have,” Old says. “We bought black trucks and decided to do some custom decals promoting our business and the Sentricon System.”
With the help of a local decal application company, they created a unique look to help differentiate themselves from other pest control companies in the area. Matt Ankerholz, Old’s “second in command,” got the idea to use images of the Sentricon® System stations with light trails behind them after seeing the image in a trade advertisement.
“I thought the color combination worked well,” Ankerholz says. “With the black truck and the green stations, it contrasted enough to make the Sentricon stations really stand out.”
Old contacted Zach Morehead, his Dow AgroSciences sales representative, to obtain a digital copy of the image, which Old used to create the decals.
“We really hit a home run with this,” Old says. “Sometimes you put decals on your truck and it looks like you just stuck something on it. But this was specifically designed for our trucks, so it fits perfectly.”
It cost roughly $4,000 to have the custom decals created and applied to the three trucks. A local company, Lowen Corporation in Hutchinson, Kan., came to Robertson’s to apply the decals. It took about five hours per truck to expertly apply the decals.
The trucks also feature the Robertson’s Termite and Pest Control name, as well as contact information for the business. “We knew we wanted to display something to leverage Sentricon, but we also wanted to include our company information,” Old says.
There has been a lot of chatter from customers and potential customers as a result of the decals. The best payoff, Old says, is that business has gone up.
“This year was the best March we’ve ever had by about 10 percent,” Old says. “The visibility of our trucks has really helped. You can’t pinpoint and say they’re the only reason, but they’ve helped. Our old trucks were really plain and simple, and now we stand out above everyone else. The trucks are definitely noticed, and people come over to look at them. It’s a great way to engage with customers and potential customers.”
